| International Conference on Judicial Activism and Restraint
On 13-14 July 2010 the Constitutional Court of Georgia held the international Conference on "Judicial Activism and Restraint: Theory and Practice of Constitutional Rights".
The participants of the conference discussed the issues of Different Standards of Judicial Review; The Right and Wrong Kinds of Judicial Activism; Central and Eastern Europe: Between the Politics and Adjudication; Manifestation of Political and Ideological Sympathies in Decisions and Reasoning of the Courts; The Relationship between Constitutional Courts, Legislators and Judicial Power in the European System of Judicial Review.
Foreign key speakers attended the Conference: Ms. Francoise TULKENS, Judge of the European Court of Human Rights; Judge Philip M. PRO, District of Nevada, United States; Judge John R. TUNHEIM, District of Minnesota, United States; Professor Alan MORRISON, Associate Dean of the George Washington University Law School; Dr. Tomasz MILEJ, University of Cologne; Mr. James HAMILTON, Member of the Venice Commission; Director of Public Prosecutions of Ireland; Professor Kaarlo TUORI, Department of Public Law, University of Helsinki, Member of the Venice Commission; Ms. Tania GROPPI, Full Professor of Public Law, Research Centre for European and Comparative Public Law (DIPEC), University of Siena.
The conference was held by the Constitutional Court of Georgia in partnership with the Public Defender's Office of Georgia, European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission), Center for Constitutional Studies of Ilia State University and German Technical Cooperation (GTZ).
